How to download and install a ChatGPT skill
Step 1: Get the skill
After purchasing or downloading a free skill, you receive a SKILL.md file (or a .txt equivalent). Open it in any text editor — the relevant content is everything after the frontmatter block at the top.
Step 2: Open ChatGPT Custom Instructions
- Log into ChatGPT
- Click your profile icon (bottom left)
- Select Customize ChatGPT
- Click the Custom Instructions tab
Paste the skill content into the "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?" field. Save.
Step 3: Or use a ChatGPT Project
Projects are better for skill-specific workflows — they let you activate different skills for different projects:
- Click Explore GPTs or create a new Project from the sidebar
- Open Project instructions
- Paste the skill content
- Save
The skill activates immediately for that project. Switch projects to switch skills.
That's it. No app installs, no API keys, no setup fees. The skill is now active in your ChatGPT session.
How to download and install a Claude skill
Step 1: Get the skill file
Download the skill (free or paid). You get a SKILL.md file with instructions formatted for Claude.
Step 2: Create a Claude Project
- Go to claude.ai
- Click Projects in the sidebar
- Create a new project (name it after the skill, e.g. "YouTube Script Writer")
- Click Project instructions
Step 3: Paste and save
Copy everything from the SKILL.md file below the frontmatter. Paste it into the Project Instructions field. Click save.
Every conversation in that project now has the skill active. Claude behaves like a specialized assistant for that workflow.
For Claude Code users: Download the .mdc file instead (included in your download). Drop it into your project's .cursor/rules/ folder (or .claude/skills/ if you're using Claude Code directly). The skill activates automatically.
How to install an AI skill in Cursor
Cursor reads rule files from your project's .cursor/rules/ directory. AI skills formatted for Cursor use the .mdc format.
Step 1: Download the .mdc file
Every Creator Skills download includes the .mdc format alongside the standard SKILL.md. Download the .mdc version.
Step 2: Add it to your Cursor project
your-project/
└── .cursor/
└── rules/
└── your-skill-name.mdc ← put it here
Step 3: Verify it's active
In Cursor, open the command palette and check that your rule file appears. With alwaysApply: true set in the frontmatter (which all Creator Skills use), it activates automatically for every session in that project.
